In this intermezzo blog I will tell you about the quest for the “perfectly playing instrument”. A rather technical story but after all, this blog-site is about my Bechstein.

Pianist are funny people: first they choose an instrument which is basically a percussive one, striking strings with a hammer. Then they spend most of their time practicing to make the audience forget that fact by trying to produce a beautiful tone and make the instrument “sing”.

Polyphony is a horizontal approach to composing as opposed to the vertical texture where a melody is accompanied, supported, “carried” by chords underneath.

The creative use of the pedal. Together with a pianist’s sensitive touch a wonderful almost magical sound can be created where boundaries blur.
